Design and Technology

Design and Technology

Design and Technology prepares children for our rapidly changing world.  Through our carefully planned activities, children are encouraged to become independent, creative problem-solvers.  They think as individuals and as part of a team to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products for a specific purpose.  Children are encouraged to reflect on and evaluate the items that they have made as well as thinking about present and past design and technology by assessing its use and impact on the world.  Design and Technology helps all children to become astute and informed consumers and potential future innovators.

In the EYFS, Design and Technology is taught through an area known as ‘Expressive Arts and Design’.  Children are supported to explore using a wide range of media and materials and they are encouraged to share their ideas through a wide variety of activities within the classroom provision.

In Key Stage 1 Design and Technology is taught as a discrete subject and, wherever possible, cross curricular links are made to help the children to develop a better understanding of the wider world although teachers make it explicit to the children that they are learning Design and Technology skills and encourage them to think like “Designers.”
